This is a BIG WIN for us in the fitness industry who have been keeping higher consciousness around better policies regarding the use of TRANSFATS.
I was leafing through my daily eMails when I was shocked to find out that NYC is now BANNING TRANSFAT in Food Service Establishments.
I am so happy! This is a step in the right direction. This ban does not include pre-packed products but it stops restaurants from
serving cooked or prepared foods that are designed to eat right off the plate or out of the cup and makes them alter their recipes so they
Do not include transfat.
NEXT STEPS
- Let's get this done in NJ and in every state!
- Create Law that does not allow transfat to be used in high volume food production

READ MORE ABOUT THE BAN:
Beginning July 1, 2008:
No food containing partially hydrogenated vegetable oils, shortenings, or margarines with 0.5 grams or more trans fat per serving may be stored, used, or served by food service establishments.
The regulation does not apply to food served in the manufacturer's original, sealed packaging, such as a package of crackers or a bag of potato chips.
Basic Facts on Trans Fat
What is trans fat? Trans fat is a type of fat that raises the risk of heart disease. While some trans fat occurs naturally,
most is artificial. The regulation addresses only artificial trans fat, which is the main dietary source of trans fat.
What is artificial trans fat? Artificial trans fat is manufactured through a chemical process. It is found in partially hydrogenated vegetable oil. Foods that contain artificial trans fat include margarines, shortenings, and fry oils, as well as many baked good, mixes, and packaged foods.
Why is trans fat so bad? Trans fat is the most dangerous type of dietary fat. It increases bad (LDL) cholesterol and lowers good (HDL) cholesterol. Conservative estimates suggest that trans fat is responsible for at least 500 deaths from heart disease in New York City each year. Trans fat has no known health benefits, and there is no harmless level of artificial trans fat consumption.
What oils should you use in you own cooking? Enova(soybean and canola blend), canola, olive, sunflower, safflower, grape seed, and soybean oils are light/medium duty oils that all contain 0g of trans fat. These oils can be used for salad dressings, marinades, sautéing, and stir frying. Please note all oils contain about 120 calories per tablespoon and do contain varying levels of heart healthy mono and poly unsaturated fats. All oils also contain varying levels of saturated fats. Read your labels.
How do you avoid trans fats in packaged foods? Look under Total Fats on your nutrition food label. Choose products that report 0g trans fats. Products can state 0g of trans fat if they contain less than 0.5g of trans fat per serving. To completely avoid trans fats, look under the ingredients lists. Avoid any product that lists partially hydrogenated or hydrogenated oil as one of its ingredients. For more information visit www.notransfatnyc.org
